After 18 years of apprenticeship in hat-making, Ehrhardt Koch launched New Era in 1920. In the 1930s, baseball became an increasingly popular sport in the USA. Even back then, players wore caps to protect themselves from the sun. New Era then began producing baseball caps. The success was immediate. In fact, as early as 1934, New Era became the official cap supplier for the Cleveland Indians.
